Variety has announced that CNN will be bringing the late and beloved Larry King (Tell it to the King, Tell Me More) to its streaming app All Access. Interviews from Larry King Live will be released in batches with corresponding themes such as Hollywood, politics, music, comedy, and others.
King’s iconic voice transitioned smoothly from his radio show, The Larry King Show, to being the cornerstone of CNN’s primetime block. Titled The Best of Larry King, the program will stream on both CNN’s website and its streaming app. The archives’ contents will be released in batches each week on Friday until June 19th, with the first batch already available.
With the streaming wars in advanced stages, platforms are finding all kinds of ways to add content as it’s being consumed faster than it can be produced. Many studios are taking advantage of archival content to bring it to a new generation, appease history buffs, and try to wrangle the older broadband customers. With King’s legacy of nonpartisan, wholesome interviews, he has great potential to help heal the world once again by giving us a glimpse of a time when Americans seemed far less divided. This type of content will easily captivate wide swaths of demographics. The interviews being released are truly part of American history, with figures like Barack Obama, Donald and Melania Trump, and cultural icons like Lady Gaga and Beyoncé making appearances, as well as the famous Beatles reunion (Paul, Ringo, Yoko, and Olivia Harrison). It’s clear to see there will be plenty of streaming material for everyone.
This type of evergreen content, or so it’s called, is exactly what CNN is looking to present in its streaming App, as unlike shows that focus on daily news that go outdated the next week, these interviews are really just historical windows into the personalities of our loved cultural icons. With a quarter of a century on the air interviewing our best and brightest, it’s fair to say this collection is a massive treasure of media just waiting to be released.
