Get ready to meet the mother. Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that L. Scott Caldwell will be playing Laverne, Captain Holt’s (Andre Braugher) mother on an upcoming episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
This is the second family member of Holt’s family that viewers get to meet. Last season, viewers met Holt’s sister, who was a polar opposite of him. But this time around, the apple hasn’t fallen fall from the tree, as Holt and his mother are nearly similar.
“They have a very formal relationship as you would expect,” executive producer Dan Goor said. “At one point she says in the flattest most deadpanned way, ‘Ah, yes, humor. There’s nothing more that I love than laughter and laughing,’ as she stands cross-armed next to a cross-armed Holt.”
Viewers have already seen the formal relationship that the two have, such as an episode early on in the show’s run where he addressed her over the phone as Your Honor, since she’s a federal judge.
In the episode, Caldwell’s character, Laverne, will turn to the members of the 99th precinct for help after she’s been the victim of a crime.
Caldwell’s most well-known role is Rose on Lost, a role she held throughout the show’s original run. She’s also had guest appearances on many shows, including How To Get Away With Murder, Grey’s Anatomy, Madam Secretary, ER and Nip/Tuck. She also appeared in the Will Smith movie Concussion in 2015.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine centers on the fictional 99th precinct of New York City, which is located in Brooklyn. The show stars Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta, one of the detectives on the force who takes a more laid-back approach to detective work, which is somewhat of an annoyance to his colleagues. The show is currently in its fourth season and is averaging a 0.99 rating in the 18 to 49 demographic, according to TV by the Numbers.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine returns to Fox’s schedule on Apr. 11, where the cliffhanger involving Gina (Chelsea Peretti) is expected to be resolved. Caldwell’s episode is expected to air some time in May.
