An exclusive from Deadline reveals that Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodline) is in negotiations to play Hal Jordan in the new high-profile HBO series Lanterns. The series is based on the DC comics series Green Lantern, and although it has not been officially confirmed, sources have told Deadline that Chandler would be playing Hal Jordan – the same Green Lantern portrayed by Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) in the 2011 film Green Lantern.
Although not much is known about the series and its plot, it has been described as “new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” according to Deadline. Currently, there is no actor attached to playing Stewart, and the search is ongoing. Currently, there is no actor attached to playing Stewart and the search is ongoing. Lanterns is being headed by Chris Mundy (Ozark) and Damon Lindelof (Watchmen). Famed comic book writer Tom King is also attached to the project. King and Lindelof will co-write the project and executive produce, and Mundy will be tasked as showrunner.
The series will consist of eight episodes produced by HBO, Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The series got a straight-to-series order back in June, and it will be one of the first new titles to be produced from a revamped DC Studios and one of the first live-action adaptations of the Green Lantern in the past decade.
The co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios, Peter Safran (Aquaman) and James Gunn (Guardians of The Galaxy), said about Lanterns during the announcement of the series, “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns bring them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman,” according to Deadline.
