Warning: this article contains spoilers for the original King of the Hill television series, as well as the recent reboot on Hulu.
Mike Judge’s (Beavis and Butt-Head, Common Side Effects) recently released fourteenth season of King of The Hill has split up a couple from the original series, according to first reports from Comicbook’s Evan Valentine. The divorce marks one of many status quo changes to the original 1997 series, which takes place after an eight-year time skip in-universe.
Some of the changes, like Hank and Peggy Hill’s furlough in Saudi Arabia and their son Bobby’s newfound position as the head chef at a German-Japanese fusion restaurant, have been prevalently displayed throughout the new season’s marketing; less telegraphed, however (unless you’re someone who reads episode titles) was that Kahn and Minh Souphanousinphone, the Hills’ Laotian-American neighbors, had split up in their absence. Episode eight of the revival, “Kahn-scious Uncoupling,” finds Hank in an awkward position after Kahn confides in him that he and Minh separated a long time ago, but are maintaining the illusion of a marriage for appearances’ sake. Tasked with arranging the “couple’s” 30th anniversary party, Hank is forced to decide whether or not to let his family in on the secret — until in typical animated sitcom fashion, things spiral out of control.
While ultimately a celebration of the relationships between the members of the Hills’ nuclear family, the original King of the Hill was never afraid to broach the topic of divorce. It’s something Hank himself is painfully familiar with, both in his childhood, with his parents’ separation acting as a frequent source of grief, and in his adulthood, with series mainstay Bill also having his perpetual loneliness played for laughs.
As “Kahn-scious Uncoupling” ends with Kahn moving out of the family house after their divorce becomes publicized, it remains unclear what the future holds for both him and Minh. King of the Hill has already been renewed for season fifteen, so regardless of the answer, audiences can expect to see more of Hank, Kahn, and the rest of Arlen in early 2026.
King of the Hill is streaming now on Hulu.
