One of Netflix’s biggest series of 2023 is prepped to return this month. According to Deadline, Emmy-nominated Keri Russell (The Americas, Felicity) returns in the first full trailer for The Diplomat‘s second season. View the trailer for the political thriller below.
The series centers on Russell’s U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler who finds herself between a rock and a hard place when she’s appointed to a new position just as the Britian suffers a terrorist attack. While balancing diplomacy amidst the global strife, she’s hampered by the shadow of a former ambassador and estranged husband, Rufus Sewell’s Hal Wyler. And must dance around rumors of a potentially new position – Vice President of the United States. What was supposed to be a stroll in the park delves Kate into a twisted caper of political schemes and fatal alliances.
Season one concluded with the revelation of who was behind the terror attack, and the culprit attempting to tie up loose ends with an explosive car bombing, targeting Sewell’s Hal Wyler. Fortunately, as seen in the trailer, Hal survives the blast and continues to aid Kate in the coming challenges. One of those new challenges is Allison Janney (I, Tonya, The West Wing) who joins the second season as Vice President Grace Penn whose job Kate is rumored to take, making her the season’s newest adversary. The returning cast for season two includes David Gysai (Carnival Row, Containment), Ali Ahn (Agatha All Along, Raising Dion), Ato Essandoh (The Code, Outpost), and Rory Kinnear (MEN, Bank of Dave).
In April, life imitated art as Deadline hosted series creator Debora Cahn (Paterno, Homeland), Russell, and Sewell for an Electionline panel in April, leading into the annual White House Correspondents Dinner. In addition to the series creatives, the panel included Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Anthony Fauci, Samantha Power, and current Democratic VP candidate, Governor Tim Walz.
The second season of Netflix’s The Diplomat arrives on October 31.
