Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars) has signed onto the Hulu project Monsterland. The anthology series will be brought to life from Nathan Ballingrud’s collection of stories titled North American Lake Monsters, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, the drama is “set in a world that involves encounters with fantasy creatures like mermaids and fallen angels, and follows broken people driven to desperate acts in an attempt to repair their lives. Tran will join the cast alongside Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black) and Mike Colter (Luke Cage).
In an episode called “Iron River, MI,” Tran will portray Lauren, a young bride, who is forced to face the hometown she left in hopes of a new life after the disappearance of her best friend Elena at 16. Produced by Annapurna Television, the series is created, written and executive produced by Mary Laws (Neon Demon). Other executive producers for the project include Babak Anvari (Wounds), Lucan Toh (Under the Shadow), Megan Ellison (Zero Dark Thirty) and Sue Naegle (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs). Ali Krug (Soundtrack) will serve as a co-executive producer, via The Hollywood Reporter.
Prior to the role as Lauren, Tran had her breakout moment in 2017 as rebel Rose Tico in the The Last Jedi and returned to the role in 2019 for The Rise of the Skywalker. There is currently not a release date or a trailer for the Monsterland series but it will stream on Hulu.
