According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO and DC Studios’ superhero crime drama Lanterns adds Kelly Macdonald (Brave, Never Let Me Go). Macdonald is known for her works on No Country for Old Men, Gosford Park, The Radleys and I Came By, among many others. She has also earned an Emmy nomination for her work on Boardwalk Empire.
HBO’s Lanterns is a new addition to the DC Studios family as it adapts the story of Green Lantern in a new form. Lanterns is based on the DC comics and follows an intergalactic space force that patrols and protects the universe using their green power rings to manifest different items through their willpower. The series is set to be more of a detective take and follows Hal Jordan, a legend among the Lanterns, as he mentors John Stewart, a new recruit to the Lantern Corp. The two get thrown into a dark mystery on Earth as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. Hal Jordan will be played by Kyle Chandler (Manchester by the Sea, King Kong), and John Stewart will be played by Aaron Pierce (Rebel Ridge, Brother).”
Macdonald is set to play Sheriff Kelly, who is described as a no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town. Through the series, she faces many challenges as it is unveiled that the town she lives in has many secrets.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the series is created by Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, Lost) as well as Award-winning comic book writer Tom King (Heroes in Crisis, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow). All three also executive produce and write for the series, with Mundy also serving as showrunner. Lanterns is scheduled to have an eight-episode season. The first two episodes will be directed by James Hawes (One Life, The 39 Steps), who will also be the executive producer.
Lanterns have yet to reveal an official premiere window, as well as the rest of the cast for the series.
