It was announced on Monday that Kathryn Hahn (Bad Moms) will be joining the cast of the upcoming dark comedy series The Shrink Next Door on Apple TV+. She joins Will Ferrell (Holmes & Watson) and Paul Rudd (Living with Yourself) who are already set to star, according to Deadline.
The Shrink Next Door is based on the podcast by Wondery and Bloomberg media. Written and hosted by columnist Joe Nocera, it’s a true crime investigation. Airing in 2019, Nocera looks into and uncovers the truth behind a destructive therapist named Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf who sabotaged one of his patient’s lives for decades, Marty Markowitz. In the upcoming series, Rudd will be portraying the controlling and obsessive psychiatrist Dr. “Ike” and Ferrell will be playing the helpless patient Marty.
The patient and doctor relationship of over thirty years gradually went off the rails as Herschkopf immersed himself in Marty’s life. He manipulated and controlled Marty, convincing him to cut off ties with family and friends. It all crescendoed when Herschkopf attempted to seize control of Marty’s family business after already moving into his home.
Hahn will be portraying Marty’s younger sister Phyllis as she watches her brother slowly become disconnected from everyone except his therapist.
Hahn was recently seen in the 2019 HBO limited series Mrs. Fletcher. She also starred in the limited Amazon Prime Original series I Love Dick in 2016. She is set to be featured in the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision.
Along with starring roles, Ferrell and Rudd will executive produce the series. It will also be co-executive produced by the host of the podcast, Nocera. It will be directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) and written by Georgia Pritchett (Succession). Both co-executive produce. The Shrink Next Door will consist of eight episodes.
