Secrets don’t stay secrets for long in small towns. In the new full length trailer released for the upcoming HBO limited series Mare of Easttown, Kate Winslet (Ammonite) portrays detective Mare Sheen on a mission to solve the murder of a local girl, via Vulture.
Every small town has its heroes, and in a small Pennsylvania town that person is Mare Sheen, though she’d rather not be. Mare clinched her fifteen minutes of fame in high school when she made a big buzzer beating shot, winning the school a major basketball game. The whole town still reminisces on her moment of glory with write-ups in the paper, something Mare does not like to be reminded of.
Now, she’s a glum single mother and local detective well into a year of an unsolved case of a local missing girl. That all changes when the girl’s dead body is found in the river one day, sending Mare hunting. A county detective is sent to assist her with the case, unveiling the first look at Evan Peters (American Horror Story) in action as wide eyed newbie Colin Zabel in contrast to Mare’s blunt and cynical approach. Together they go on a wild goose chase, interviewing several people in town who all are seemingly hiding something.
The series co-stars Jean Smart (Watchmen) as Mare’s mother, Angourie Rice (The Nice Guys) as Mare’s teenage daughter, Guy Pearce (The Gentlemen) as a local college professor, John Douglas Thompson (Michael Clayton) as police chief Carter, Neal Huff (The Wire) as Mare’s cousin Father Dan Hastings, James McArdle (Ammonite) as Deacon Mark Burton, Cailee Spaeney (Devs) as a troubled teen living with her erratic father, portrayed by Patrick Murney (Seven Seconds), and David Denham (The Office) as Mare’s ex-husband Frank.
Mare of Easttown will premiere on HBO Sunday, April 18. The series is created and written in its entirety by Brad Ingelsby (The Way Back). Craig Zobel (The Hunt, The Leftovers) directs all seven episodes.
