According to Variety, Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek: Nemesis, Star Trek: Voyager) is hopeful for third installment of the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy. The series premiered its second season on Netflix on July 1, and during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Mulgrew said the energy in the panel’s ballroom was “electric.”
“I had a full auditorium on Sunday morning for the panel,” she said. “They were thrilled. They were delighted! They’re desperate for this kind of television. I don’t think there’s anything quite like it on television now, because it’s teaching ‘Star Trek’ to a new generation to young children in an entirely novel way.”
Star Trek: Prodigy has come a long way in finding a stable place to air, with CBS Studios striking a deal with Netflix to air both seasons. Before the agreement, the series’ first season aired on Nickelodeon and Paramount+. Unfortunately, Paramount+ canceled the series while the second season was in production.
As per Variety, Mulgrew and fans of the series praised Kevin (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) and Dan (The Croods: Family Tree) Hageman for their ability to deliver complex storylines. “The Hagemans don’t patronize anybody,” she said. “They wouldn’t patronize a five-year old; they’re elevating the five year old.”
Mulgrew also praised Alex Kurtzman’s (Sleepy Hallow, The Mummy) leadership after addressing the state of the Star Trek franchise. “There will never be a saturation point, because there is never a saturation point for this kind of decency, this kind of excitement,” she said. “This message is good, and it’s profoundly important. This is truly what we aspire to be, the best of ourselves.”
Mulgrew added, “It sounds a little Pollyanna, but when it’s as beautifully created as Prodigy is, and as the other shows are, it’s not Pollyanna at all. It’s how we should be behaving in this world.
