Okay, boomer. The first trailer has arrived for the Netflix original series Jupiter’s Legacy, proving that old superheroes can still pack a punch. Based on the comic book series by Mark Miller (Kiss-Ass) and Frank Quitely (The Authority), the first season will premiere on the streamer May 7, as reported by Indiewire.
Promising to be a new kind of superhero series, the comic book series was originally published in 2013 and examines societal issues throughout America. In another twist, the series focuses on the world’s first generation of superheroes as they’ve grown old with long white hair and grey beards, but they’re still able to do serious damage in a fight.
Netflix released the official synopsis for the series picked up by Indiewire: “After nearly a century of keeping mankind safe, the world’s first generation of superheroes must look to their children to continue the legacy. But tensions rise as the young superheroes, hungry to prove their worth, struggle to live up to their parents’ legendary public reputations — and exacting personal standards.”
The series stars Josh Duhamel (Love, Simon)as the superhero Sheldon Sampson, Leslie Bibb (The Lost Husband) as Grace/Lady Liberty, Ben Daniels (The Crown) as Walter/Brainwave, Mike Wade (SEAL team) as Fitz Small/ The Flare, and Matt Lanter (Timeless) as George Hutchence/Skyfox. Elena Kampouris (Before I Fall) stars as Sampson’s daughter Chloe, and Andrew Horton (How to Talk to Girls at Parties) as his son Brandon.
Flipping back and forth between present day and nearly a century ago, the trailer reveals how the original superheroes, called the Union, came upon a mysterious island that granted them supernatural powers. Duhamel is almost unrecognizable in present day as Sampson, having become old with a mane of long white hair and a beard reminiscent of Gandalf ’s in Lord of the Rings. After 90 years of fighting crime and saving the world, he’s ready to pass the torch on to his two children. But it’s the ultimate clash between two generations as his children are immersed in this new superficial world of selfies and social media and aren’t quite up to the task of saving the world.
