A Deadline Exclusive has announced that Josué Guerra (The Wingwalker, Seven Lovers) has been cast in the pilot of The Border as a series regular opposite E.J. Bonilla (Gemini Man, Four). The Border is a drama based on the third book in Don Winslow’s (Savages, Bobby Z) bestselling Cartel Trilogy, from Daniel Zelman (Damages, Fool’s Gold), Shane Salerno (Armageddon, Salinger) sequels, and FX Productions. The series is an extraordinary saga that uncovers the dark truths about America’s 50-year war on drugs.
The story of The Border follows the story from the streets of New York to the poppy fields of Mexico, the jungles of Central America, and the White House and ignites the myths of the drug war through the intertwining narratives of characters on both sides of the Mexican-American border–an impulsive Mexican-American DEA agent, an adolescent boxing promoter who is heir to a drug empire, a blasé teenager who ascends to power in the universe of elite consorts, and an Irish kid from the streets of Hell’s kitchen who becomes a merciless international hitman.
Guerra is set to portray Raul Barrera.
Via Disney Plus Informer, the character breakdown of The Border goes as followed:
Bonilla stars as Art Keller, a Mexican-American DEA agent.
Annie Shapiro (Unverified, Li Na: My Life) portrays Nora Hayden.
Frank Blake (Game of Thrones, Cherry) portrays Sean Callan.
Luis Bordonada (Barracuda, Vida) portrays Miguel Angel Barrera.
Sebastián Buitrón (Amsterdam, If I Were You) portrays Adan Barrera.
Zelman is serving as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer, along with Salerno, who adapted The Border for television with Zelman, Winslow, Diego Gutierrez, Scott Free (The Art of Life), and Jayro Bustamante (Tremors, 1991), who will be directing the pilot. The consulting producer will be Anabel Hernández (Silencio, Noticiero Telemundo).
The pilot of The Border will begin production at FX Productions in Mexico in 2023. The premiere date has not yet been disclosed.
