Joss Whedon and Monica Owusu-Breen In Development of Diverse Reboot ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’

One in the seemingly endless stream of TV reboots is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the extremely popular seven season show based off the film of the same name. Its cult fanbase kept it going long after the show finished as well as supporting it’s huge five season spin-off, Angel. It is in development at Fox 21 Studios.

15 years later, this summer, Josh Whedon along with his Agents of Shield co-producer and Midnight, Texas creator, Monica Owusu-Breen who will function as co-creator, showrunner and executive producer are creating a reboot of the classic show.

Wheadon is returning to TV from taking an extremely active role in writing and directing The Avengers’ films by returning to this as well as singing on to work on The Nevers on HBO and Pippa Smith: Grown Up Detective on Freeform. Owusu-Breen has worked on Alias, Charmed and Revolution. Gail Berman, Joe Earley, Fran Kazui and Kaz Kazui will also executive produce the show.

As reported on Deadline, whilst the mythology would stay the same, the set-up of it would be very different with the producers saying, “Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today.” This would manifest in having a far more diverse cast as well as having the slayer be black. However, the show is in the early stages and it has been stressed that nothing has been nailed down.

It is not attached to a network but is suspected to start a bidding war. It’s original network, WB and Fox 21 Studios, the cable/streaming branch of 20th Century Fox, were put on the map by the original version of the series.
