According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joseph Kosinski, the filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed Top Gun: Maverick, has been named director of an upcoming Miami Vice movie. Kosinski will also be producing through Monolith.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kosinski is repped by CAA, Untitled and Sloane Offer. He was also the director of films Tron: Legacy and Oblivion, but it was Top Gun Maverick that elevated his status as premier filmmaker. With this considered, the Miami Vice movie will not be his next project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kosinski will be directing and producing in a UFO conspiracy thriller that Apple won in a bidding war in March. He will then work on the racing drama F1 in June, which notably features Brad Pitt (Fight Club).
The Hollywood Reporter also mentions that Dan Gilory (Nightcrawler) is penning the movie’s script, and Dylan Clark (The Batman) is set to produce the Universal feature through Dylan Clark Productions. Gilroy is repped by CAA, LBI, and Howard Abrahamson, while Clark is repped by CAA and 42West.
Miami Vice was created by Anthony Yerkovich (Hill Street Blues) and executively produced by Michael Mann (The Insider). The show’s premise bases off two undercover Miami police officers, played by Don Johnson (Doctor Odyssey) and Phillip Michael Thomas (Sparkle) and their challenges against crime, all while recognizing these cops’ fascinations with pastel suits. Some of the show’s most notable feats include it’s influence across television and men’s fashion alike, along with a film that released in 2006 of the same name. Mann directed this feature, which notably starred Jamie Foxx (Ray) and Colin Ferrell (The Batman). The film carried a much darker atmosphere compared to it’s television series counterpart, earning $163.7 million dollars worldwide.
Mann told The Hollywood Reporter during an interview that, “The ambition of the show was to break the form of everything that had come before.”
