Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Trial of the Chicago 7) plays a man in crisis in the first trailer for the Apple TV+ limited series, Mr. Corman. Playing the titular role, a middle school teacher going through an early mid-life crisis, Gordon-Levitt also writes and directs, as reported by Indiewire.
A ten-part dramedy series, Gordon-Levitt stars alongside Debra Winger (Terms of Endearment), Juno Temple (Vinyl), Arturo Castro (Broad City), Jamie Chung (Lovecraft Country), Alexander Jo (Sharp Edge), Shannon Woodward (Westworld), Hector Hernandez, and the American rapper, Logic.
In the first trailer for Mr. Corman, Josh Corman is a seemingly regular guy living his own slice of the American dream. But under the veneer is the man on the verge of a nervous breakdown, as he becomes haunted by all the things he’s never done. Originally dreaming of becoming a musician, now he has to settle for singing along to music in the car as he drives to work, where he teaches the fifth grade at a public school in the San Fernando Valley. He confesses to his roommate in the trailer, played by Castro, of the sense of impeding doom lurking: “I’m having anxiety, or panic or something. both.” Aware of the privileges he has and all the things he should be grateful for, Corman still believes there’s something more for him out there. Filled with dread and anxiety, he goes on an at times surrealist journey as he attempts to become a better person.
Along with his own problems, Corman also has an ex-fiancé who’s just moved out, played with compassion by Temple, and a tough-love mother played by Winger. The series is described as a dark comedy, as it balances the bleak realities in life alongside the absurd. Starting his career in television during the 90s, Gordon-Levitt is no stranger to comedy as he was a guest star in the Fox sitcom That 70s Show and also starred in the NBC sitcom, 3rd Rock from the Sun. Since then, Gordon-Levitt worked mainly in the film industry for the duration of the 21st century, and now as he makes his return to the small screen he could not be more excited.
Sharing the trailer for Mr. Corman on his Instagram, Gordon-Levitt captioned it: “MR. CORMAN trailer! Finally writing & directing again. Very lucky and deeply grateful. Cannot wait for you all to see this show.” In addition to starring, writing, and directing, Gordon-Levitt also executive produces alongside Ravi Nandan (Euphoria), Bruce Eric Kaplan (Six Feet Under), and Inman Young (Ramy). Mr. Corman will debut the first two episodes on Apple TV+ Friday, August 6. New episodes will follow weekly on Fridays.
