FX’s drama The Shards is officially adding Tony Award-winning producer Jordan Roth to its cast in a recurring role, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Specifics regarding his part are being kept under wraps for now.
Roth, a producer on audience favorites Kinky Boots, Hades Town, Moulin Rouge!, and Broadway’s 2021 revival of Company, along with other shows, will feature alongside Kaia Gerber (Bottoms, Babylon), Igby Rigney (Midnight Mass, F9: The Fast Saga), Homer Gere (Euphoria, Tigers and Sparrows), Wes Bentley (Yellowstone, American Beauty), Graham Campbell and Hayes Warner, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The series is based on Bret Easton Ellis’ (American Psycho, Less Than Zero) novel of the same name, which takes place in the 1980s and follows Bret, a student at an elite L.A. prep school whose world is upended by the arrival of a mysterious new student, Robert Mallory (Gere), which coincides with the murders of a serial killer, according to an official synopsis provided by The Hollywood Reporter. The novel also contains some autobiographical elements from Ellis’ life.
Originally released as a serialized audiobook on Ellis’ podcast in 2021, a print version was released in 2023. Per The Hollywood Reporter, HBO had previously been developing a series based on the novel, but the project never got off the ground. In February, though, Ryan Murphy (Glee, The Prom) approached Ellis about a potential adaptation under his company Ryan Murphy Television, housed under 20th TV, which will now produce the series. In July, FX officially gave the show a series order.
Murphy will serve as executive producer on the series alongside Ellis, Nick Hall (The White Lotus, The Romanoffs), Kathleen McCaffrey, Brian Young (The Brutalist, Vox Lux) and director Max Winkler (Flower, Jungleland), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Roth is currently the creative director of live entertainment company ATG Entertainment and had served as president of Jujamcyn Theaters for 15 years before the two companies merged in 2023. Per The Hollywood Reporter, he has also frequently collaborated with fashion designers, which he has often displayed on his social media profiles, and earlier this year exhibited a performance piece called “Radical Acts of Unrelenting Beauty” at the Louvre.
