Deadline reports Jon Stewart took to his podcast, The Weekly Show With Jon Stewart, to talk about the future of the Comedy Central darling, The Daily Show. Seemingly spurred on by the move by CBS, which is owned by Paramount, the parent company of his own employer, Comedy Central, to part ways with his brother-in-arms against the current administration, Stephen Colbert, and his long-running Late Show, Stewart had plenty to say about his network and the merger.
According to Deadline, Stewart went on a tangent comparing his own network, without his show and South Park, to the likes of Muzak. Muzak is an age-old company that provides background music, elevator music, and white noise sounds to boost production and help keep confidentiality in offices by drowning out background conversations. Basically, saying without those two powerhouses, the entire network is just something people put on in the background and has no real appeal. He also went on to act as if he was to be cancelled, it wouldn’t be much skin off his back, as he has “kicked out of worse establishments” to paraphrase.
To be specific, Deadline quoted Stewart as saying, “Unfortunately, we haven’t heard anything from them,” referring to the upper brass at Skydance, the company which is looking to merge with Paramount. “They haven’t called me and said like ‘Don’t get too comfortable in that office, Stewart.’ But let me tell you something, I’ve been kicked out of shittier establishments than that. We’ll land on our feet.”
Per Deadline, Stewart had the following to say about whether or not Skydance would pull the plug on his show, “I’d like to believe that without The Daily Show… I don’t know. Comedy Central is kind of like muzak at this point. I think we’re the only sort of life that exists on a current basis other than South Park. But it’s the only thing on there. I’d like to think we bring enough value to the property. If they’re looking at it as purely a real estate transaction, I think we bring a lot of value. But that may not be their consideration. They may sell the whole fucking place for parts, I just don’t know. We’ll deal with it when we do.”
Some media outlets have speculated its President Donald Trump, who is pressuring media outlets to silence his critics. Even Charlamagne tha God chimed in, claiming that the recent removal of Colbert at CBS was to make a concession to the President, and during his “Donkey of the Day” segment, calling the cancellation of Colbert’s show after criticizing the CBS settlement with the President “extortion dressed up in a suit and tie.” He also went on to call the tactics textbook authoritarian rule and claimed Trump is trying to turn America into North Korea. If this is true, then Stewart would definitely be in his sights as he has been a very vocal critic of the President. CBS remains firm that the decision to end the long-running American institution was purely based on financial situations. Which pans out since it has been reported that The Late Show was allegedly hemorrhaging $40-$50 million annually.
Stewart may have some wiggle room, as it looks like Trump’s next target is Jimmy Kimmel. The President took to his Truth Social to gloat in the cancellation of The Late Show and take the chance to call Kimmel “the moron at NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show,” saying that he is next.
