Even though freshman series Grandfathered was cancelled by Fox, you won’t have to languish away without John Stamos on your TV. The actor known for his roles on Full House (as well as reboot Fuller House), ER and the recent comedy Grandfathered has taken a new role as a recurring character on Fox’s highly-stylized horror comedy, Scream Queens, Deadline reports.
The role is both a new one and old for Stamos. It’s a unique departure for him, because he is more well-known for his comedic roles in Full House, Grandfathered and The New Normal, and while Scream Queens has its light moments, there’s a much darker, more sinister undercurrent to the show.
However, the terrain Stamos will be walking will be familiar as well, because Stamos has worked with the executive producers of Scream Queens, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, before. Stamos recurred in the comedy, The New Normal, which was created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. He also made an appearance in Murphy and Falchuk’s teen musical dramady, Glee. Nellie Andreeva for Deadline reports that the role was part of an effort by Fox to keep the Grandfathered star on screen at the network after cancelling the freshman comedy. Season 2 of Scream Queens may also be familiar to Stamos, because, as Deadline reports, the season will take place in a hospital full of bizarre but intriguing medical cases. Stamos will play Dr. Brock Holt, the brilliant head surgeon at the hospital with a secret. The role is familiar because Stamos played Dr. Tony Gates on ER for five seasons.
Though the setting is changing for the next season of Scream Queens, Deadline reports that much of the cast, whose characters were still alive by the end of Season 1, will be reprising their roles. This includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin, Keke Palmer, Glen Powell and Niecy Nash.
Scream Queens enjoyed a relatively early renewal, getting its second season pickup back in January. According to Deadline, Scream Queens was an interesting study in the diminishing impact of live ratings on decision making. The show enjoyed only 2.7 million viewers in the Live + Same Day ratings, but Fox told Deadline that the show was number one in both Video on Demand and social media. In fact, across platforms, the ratings for Scream Queens rose 167% compared to the standard Live + Same Day ratings.
Stamos is not sticking strictly to traditional broadcast either. He is also an executive producer and reprising his role as Uncle Jessie in the Netflix sequel to popular sitcom Full House, Fuller House. According to Deadline, Stamos had a hand in getting the show together, and it has been drawing a lot of viewers to Netflix. Stamos is also in development on a musical feature film set to the songs of the Beach Boys.
