In season two, ABC’s Will Trent has selected John Ortiz (American Fiction, Promised Lane) for a recurring role. According to Deadline, he’ll portray Antonio Miranda, the maternal uncle of Ramon Rodriguez’s (Megan Leavey, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) Will. With ties to both Atlanta and
Antonio, Will’s closest relative to his murdered birth mother, was first brought up by Greg Germann’s (Grey’s Anatomy, Get Hard) James Ulster in a recent episode. The first episode featuring Ortiz will air on Tuesday, April 9th at 8 p.m.
Based on the New York Times bestselling Will Trent series by Karin Slaughter (Pieces of Her, The Good Daughter), according to Deadline, the show centers on the titular special agent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who was abandoned at birth and had a difficult upbringing in Atlanta’s overburdened foster care system. Will now has the highest clearance rate in the GBI and pursues justice using his distinct point of view.
Along with Rodriguez, the cast of the police procedural includes Erika Christensen (Cheaper By The Dozen, Parenthood) as Angie Polaski, Sonja Sohn (The Chi, The Wire) as Amanda Wagner, Iantha Richardson (American Soul, Truth Or Dare) as Faith Mitchell, and Jake McLaughlin (Home, Safe House) as Michael Ormewood.
Oly Obst (Jerked, Suncoast), Slaughter, Daniel Thomsen (The Passage, Westworld), and Liz Heldens (Friday Night Lights, The Dropout) are the executive producers. One of the co-executive producers is Rodríguez. 20th Television is in charge of producing the show.
Ortiz most recently starred in Cord Jefferson’s (The Good Place, Watchmen) American Fiction, which starred Jeffrey Wright (Jack’s Parable) and received nominations for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, and Film Independent Spirit Awards, according to Deadline. As a member of the ensemble in the movie, Ortiz also received a SAG Award nomination. Subsequently, he will appear in the films The Poolman starring Chris Pine (Star Trek, Wonder Woman), The Madness on Netflix alongside Colman Domingo (Lincoln, Selma), and Bad Monkey starring Bill Lawrence (Shrinking, Ted Lasso).
In addition to his career in theater, Ortiz is a well-known actor and director. He is also one of the founding members of the LAByrinth Theater Company. Gersh, Principal Entertainment LA, Schreck Rose Dapello, et al. are his representatives.
