In HBO’s follow up to Paolo Sorrentino’s critically praised The Young Pope, John Malkovich is going to star in The New Pope. Jude Law will also be returning to the series. The logline for The New Pope is, “as well as details on Malkovich’s character, are being kept under wraps. Production on the new season begins in November in Italy.” Production for The New Pope is expected to begin in November in Italy. The producers for the new series are: Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani from Wildside and will be co-produced by Spain’s Mediapro.
As of now, Malkovich’s role has not been announced. Maybe white smoke did not just rise from the chimney for a new season, but possibly a new pope? Malkovich is a two time Oscar nominee and has also won an Emmy as well. He was nominated for his roles in, In the Line of Fire and Places in the Heart. His Emmy win was as a supporting actor as Biff Loman in Death Of A Salesman. There were also Emmy nominations in Napoleon and RKO 281. Currently, Malkovich is with BBC One’s The ABC Murders filming his part as Hercule Poirot.
Law played as the first fictional American pope. His character (Lenny Belardo) was excessively conservative and wanted to take the Vatican world and turn it upside down. For his part in the series, Law was critically appraised in his role. He earned a nomination for a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture for TV. Right now, Law is working on multiple projects. He has a role in and upcoming Marvel film, Captain Marvel, and he is also in The Rhythm Section, which is a spy thriller with Blake Lively.
The producers for The New Pope are not only keeping quite about Malkovich’s role but also Law’s. At the end of The Young Pope (spoiler) there were questions on whether or not Lenny Belardo was either alive or dead. Yes, The New Pope is a new series, but there is some elements from its predecessor that are expected to remain.
