With the massive success for The Mandalorian, showrunner John Favreau came out and suggested that there are no plans to wrap up this story in the foreseeable future. According to Variety, Favreau has plans to connect the show to the broader events of Star Wars.
The Disney+ series plans to release season three on March 1st, estimated to bring in millions of viewers. Ever since its release in 2019, it has been the most popular original show on the streaming service and one of Lucasfilm’s hallmarks along with more recent editions such as Andor. Many see it as peak Star Wars or anything around that nature and would be willing to do anything to get their hands on more episodes.
This season will continue where it left off in season two. For season three, Mando would encounter old friends and foes as he continues to explore with his companion, Grogu. The Mandalorian will have its usual cast being Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, Kingsman: The Golden Circle) as Din Djarin, The Mandalorian or “Mando” along with David Acord (Licorice Pizza, LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales) who voices Grogu. Joining them would be Giancarlo Esposito (The Boys, Breaking Bad) as Moff Gideon, Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica, Oculus) as Bo-Katan Kryze, Carl Weathers (Rocky, Predator) as Greef Karga, Emily Swallow (Supernatural, SEAL Team) as the Armorer, Omid Abtahi (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, Brothers) as Doctor Pershing, Amy Sedaris (The Book of Boba Fett, Puss in Boots) as Peli Motto, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Kim’s Convenience, The Book of Boba Fett) as Carson Teva. There are also special guest appearances that will be made by Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future, The Tender Bar) and Tim Meadows (The Goldbergs, Poker Face) according to The Hollywood Reporter.
With direct confirmation that season four has already been written, there seems to be no bounds to which the series would explore new ideas. Referenced by Variety, John Favreau suggests this to fans, “Season 4, yeah I’ve written it already,” Favreau said when talking with BFM TV. “We have to know where we’re going to tell a fully formed story. We had mapped it out, Dave and I, and slowly you start to write each episode. I was writing it during post-production. All of it has to feel like a continuation and one full story.”
He continues with this for the series as a whole in relation with the broader Star Wars story; “The show is designed to effortlessly fit into the larger scope of “Star Wars” storytelling that is on the way with new Disney+ series such as “Ahsoka” and “Skeleton Crew.”
When asked about the multitude of ideas the show can come up with, he mentions about the likeliness to have enough to keep the release schedule rolling: “The goal is that we have enough things happen each episode that everybody wants to jump around the digital kitchen table and talk about, and argue about, and guess to what is going to happen next,” Favreau said. “I like that we’re on Disney+ where it’s each week is another episode, it’s not all dropped at once, so it allows for a back and forth. And I love to see if we guessed right, I love to see which ones the people react to better, and ultimately get the report card if we’re doing our job well.”
Season three of The Mandalorian is expected to release on March 1st on Disney+. The show is also expected to make its broadcast debut on ABC, Freeform, and FX today at 8:00m EST. In the meantime, you can watch the most recent look at The Mandalorian down below.
