Joey King (The Kissing Booth) has had memorable performances in many Netflix and Hulu originals and has now closed a first-look deal with Hulu, according to Deadline. Under this deal, she will be moving behind the camera to produce television series for the streaming service, in which she will also star.
This deal comes after King’s work in Hulu limited series The Act, which earned her an Emmy, SAG and Golden Globes nomination. She starred in the true crime story as Gypsy Blanchard, a young woman who murdered her abusive mother whom suffered by Munchausen by Proxy. Her mother Dee Dee is played by Patricia Arquette (Medium).
King tells Access, “I was actually kind of going through it a little bit after I finished up The Act. I kind of sunk into this weird depression from finishing that show. Because part of me was so used to being in that weird, dark headspace. And then, all of the sudden, it was just gone, and I was expected to just return to normal life.”
She is set to headline and executive produce A Spark of Light set up at Sony Pictures TV. The series is based on the bestselling book by Jodi Picoult under the same name. It will also be executive produced by Picoult, Doug Robinson (The Goldbergs), Alison Greenspan (If I Stay), Dan Spilo (Back Roads), and Jamie King (Hart of Dixie, White Chicks).
King is widely known for her starring role in the Netflix romantic comedy the The Kissing Booth franchise, in which she acts as the executive producer as well. The Kissing Booth 2 will premiere this Friday, July 24. She is also in the anticipated Blumhouse film The Lie alongside Peter Sarsgaard. She will produce and star in Paramount Players’ The In Between, written by Marc Klein.
