Joe Berlinger will Direct Eight-Part Criminal Justice Series for Al-Jazeera America

The award-winning filmmaker will direct and executive produce The System.

The director of Paradise Lost, Joe Berlinger, will come back to the subject of U.S. law and order by directing the eight-part series about the criminal justice system for Al-Jazeera America, as reported the The Wrap.

The series will be produced by Radical Media and will focus on topics like false confessions, mandatory sentencing and the treatment of juvenile offenders. Berlinge is specialized in documentaries about justice and injustice and he is well-known for the West Memphis Three trilogy title Paradise Lost. These movies documented the trials of a trio of teenagers who were convicted for murder.

The System will begin airing on March 16 at 9 p.m. The first episode will concentrate on thousands of dubious rulings and on the forensic evidence that produced them. The story focuses on two men: one freed because of the FBI failures and the other one convicted as a result of poor hair analysis and questionable witness testimony.

The next episodes will air each Sunday for two weeks after the first one and the rest of the five episodes will be airing in May. At the beginning of each episode, there will be introduced a specific topic showing lawyers, victims and experts.

The latest movie of Berlinger was about a mobster called Whitey Bulger and it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. The film will air on CNN in the Spring.

Al-Jazeera America launched a documentary film last August that was dedicated to subjects like criminal justice which get less attention from the cable news network.
