Jimmy Kimmel publicly apologizes for using blackface in a skit portraying NBA player Karl Malone according to Entertainment Weekly. The controversy occurred on The Man Show back in the 90’s, Kimmel additionally apologized for his delay in addressing his actions.
In statements acquired by CNN, Kimmel explains, In the late 90s, I continued impersonating Malone on TV. We hired makeup artists to make me look as much like Karl Malone as possible.” Kimmel added on, “I never considered that this might be seen as anything other than an imitation of a fellow human being, one that had no more to do with Karl’s skin color than it did his bulging muscles and bald head.” An image of the skit in question can be seen below:
The late-night host continued to express, “I’ve done dozens of impressions of famous people, including Snoop Dogg, Oprah, Eminem, Dick Vitale, Rosie, and many others. In each case, I thought of them as impersonations of celebrities and nothing more,” via CNN.
Kimmel reflected,”many of these sketches are embarrassing, and it is frustrating that these thoughtless moments have become a weapon used by some to diminish my criticisms of social and other injustices.” according to CNN.
Kimmel has also announced he would be taking a Summer break, move heavily criticized amidst the skit resurfacing. Many allegedly believe Kimmel is using this break as a way to avoid discussing his past skit. Kimmel addressed, “My summer vacation has been planned for more than a year and includes the next two summers off as well.” via Entertainment Weekly.
As of now, Kimmel is scheduled to host and executive produce the 72nd Emmy Awards in the later part of 2020.
