Jesse Armstrong Speaks About HBO’s ‘Succession’ Coming To An End And What He Has Been Doing Since

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the creator of HBO’s Succession, Jesse Armstrong (Peep Show, Fresh Meat), is set to receive this year’s Founders Award given by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. This award will be given to Armstrong on Monday, November 20th during the 51st International Emmy Awards. In anticipation of this celebration, Armstrong shared his thoughts about Succession coming to an end and if he is working on anything new.

The Hollywood Reporter first asked Armstrong if he misses the Roy family, who were the main characters of Succession. Armstrong responded, stating, “It’s a good question. On the whole, honestly, no. I feel like we did a good job in the way we ended the story.”

He continued, “I’m in touch with the cast and meet up with Brian [Cox] or Matthew [Macfadyen], and I text a bit with Sarah [Snook] or Kieran [Culkin] and Jeremy [Strong], so I do have pangs of regret with having had such an extraordinarily brilliant cast. I can’t quite bear to think that I’m not going to write for that group again. So I’m a little bit in denial about that. But on a day-to-day level, I don’t miss it. I’m enjoying not having the tremendous pressure of making the show as good as we all wanted it to be.”

Armstrong also spoke about the decision to end the series. He explained, “It was challenging. It was a big decision. I didn’t take it lightly. I’d been thinking about it when we were doing season three. And then it was absolutely a big preoccupation, all the time between season three and season four. I was chewing on it and I’d meet up with some other of my writer friends just to think it through. It was a very slow gestation, by no means made on the hoof.”

“It took a lot of the time before I got to the view of thinking this is what we should do,” Armstrong continued, “I told everyone: “This was how the story should go, I feel this in my bones, but please try to argue me out of it.” There were all sorts of reasons we’d have liked to carry on. But once you’ve felt that this is the natural end, it’s a very hard gut feeling to roll back on.”

When The Hollywood Reporter asked Armstrong if he was working on anything new right now, he stated, “No, I’m not.  I’m taking a break. I have three or four projects I like the shape of and I like looking at them on my whiteboard, but I’ve not quite embarked in earnest on any writing yet.”

He added, “I’m enjoying reading books. I’ve written a couple of reviews for places and quite enjoyed that, doing a slightly different version of writing and thinking. I’m sure it’ll be a tremendous pressure when I do start whatever I write next, whether it’s for film, TV or a book. But at the moment, it’s not pressing down on me too hard. I’m sure it will when it comes around.”

Succession first premiered in 2018 and came to an end in May 2023. The series starred Jeremy Strong (The Big Short, The Gentlemen) as Kendall Roy, Sarah Snook (Predestination, Run Rabbit Run) as Siobhan Roy, Brian Cox (Braveheart, Troy) as Logan Roy, Matthew Macfadyen (Anna Karenina, Pride & Prejudice) as Tom Wambsgans, Kiernan Culkin (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Home Alone) as Roman Roy, and many more.
