Jeremy Irons has been announced to be joining the cast of HBO’s Watchmen, and now his character has been revealed. His character was originally described as, “aging and imperious lord of a British manor.” There has been hopes that he will be playing as an older Adrian Veidt (also known as Ozymandias). While his character has not been directly named as him, the character description does have a connection to Ozymandias.
Irons’ character is being referred to as the “Blond Man.” Another (more detailed) description for the character that he has been casted for has been revealed as well, “highly intelligent and won’t let you forget it. Think William Hurt with slight Asperger’s. He’s used to being obeyed and always correct. Arrogant, erudite and patrician. Physically fit, he’s never missed a workout in his life.”
Ozymandias (from the original Watchmen comics) is very similar to this one. In the original comics Ozymandias comes from a German heritage rather than British; however, he is also highly intelligent, blond, and extremely physically fit (sounds very familiar right?). He is even seen as in peak physical condition and a world renowned gymnast. Also, even though he does have a British manor it does not exactly mean that he has British roots.
DC has used hair color in order to hide the name of a character before their reveal before. Colin Salmon, from Krypton, told ComicBook.com that his character will called “The Dark-Haired Man” during his audition. His character ended up being General Dru-Zod and his dark hair is one of his defining characteristics.
Along with Irons, it has been announced that both Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sara Vickers will be joining the cast as well. As for these two, HBO as not provided any details on who these two will play as. Executive producer for Watchmen, Damon Lindelof, wrote, “Some of the characters will be unknown. New faces. New masks to cover them. We also intend to revisit the past century of Costumed Adventuring through a surprising yet familiar set of eyes…and it is here we will be taking our greatest risks.”
Lindelof also made an announcement via an Instagram message earlier that the series will not be a reboot version of the comics calling those issues, “sacred ground.” Here is his letter to the fans:
Irons, Abdul-Mateen, and Vickers will be joining: Don Johnson (Judd Crawford), Louis Gossett Jr. (Old Man), Regina King (Angela Abraham), as well as, Tim Blake Nelson, Adelaide Clemons, and Andrew Howard which are in unidentified roles.
For right now, there is no release date for HBO’s new series Watchmen, but the cast and potential characters are looking very interesting.
