When Wednesday first premiered on Netflix in November 2022, it immediately became massive hit. According to Deadline, Wednesday broke the record for the most hours viewed in the first week of a show’s release, specifically for English-language series. Due to its success, the second season has been wildly anticipated by fans.
Created by Alfred Gough (Smallville, Into the Badlands) and Miles Millar (Smallville, Spider-Man 2), Wednesday focuses on Wednesday Addams from the infamous Addams family. Wednesday, played by Jenna Ortega (Scream VI, The Fallout), gets sent to Nevermore Academy after hurting another student. Her parents Morticia and Gomez Addams, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago, Entrapment) and Luis Guzmán (Traffic, Boogie Nights), hope the new school will give her a fresh start.
However, when a local mystery catches Wednesday’s interest, her life becomes even more complicated. As she tries to find the monster responsible for numerous murders, she also finds herself navigating a love triangle, unexpected friendships, and more.
According to Variety, Ortega will be a producer for the second season of Wednesday. When Ortega spoke with Elle Fanning (Maleficent, The Great) for Variety Studio’s Actors on Actors series, she spoke about the changes that fans can expect.
Although the first season played into the horror genre with the inclusion of monsters and psychic visions, the supernatural elements of Wednesday will be amplified in the second season. Ortega stated, “We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more.”
Additionally, Ortega believes that it is crucial to keep the character Wednesday as accurate and consistent as possible. She explained, “With a character like Wednesday, who is so beloved and such a legend, I just really didn’t want to get her wrong.”
With this sentiment in mind, Ortega wished to change a part of the first season that she believed didn’t fit Wednesday that well. She stated, “We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.”
Although filming has yet to begin, audiences can look forward to eventually seeing Jenna Ortega’s contributions as a producer in the second season of Wednesday.
