According to TVLine, actress Janet Hubert (The Mary Janes, Damascus), who played Aunt Viv in the original Fresh Prince of Bel-Air for the first three seasons, will now be playing a “wise woman” in the Peacock reboot of Bel-Air. The wise woman crosses paths with the character Hilary, who is the oldest daughter of the main family.
TVLine noted that in 1993, Herbert’s departure from the original show was documented by the media. Daphne Maxwell Reid (Fantasy Island, Trophy Wife) replaced Hubert for the last few seasons of the show. Hubert’s departure allegedly stemmed from disagreements with the star, Will Smith (Men in Black, King Richard). The feud did not end until the two actors filmed HBO Max’s Fresh Prince 2020 Reunion Special and made peace with one another.
According to TVLine, six original cast members have appeared in Bel-Air. These six cast members are: Reid, Vernee Watson-Johnson (General Hospital, Shrinking), who was originally Will’s mother, Tatyana Ali (Fly, Abbot Elementary), who was the original Ashley, and Joseph Marcell (Queenie, Mammoth), who played Geoffrey. Tyra Banks (Life-size 2, Generation Drag), who was the original Jackie, will guest star in the final season.
TVLine mentioned that season four of Bel-Air will premiere on Monday, November 24, on Peacock. The network has yet to confirm whether episodes will be released weekly or as a single binge-drop. The official long line of the show states, “Will tries to balance the fun and excitement of senior year with the expectations that have brought him to this moment, Carlton tests his own resolve as he deals with the fallout of some very big decisions that could threaten his future. Together, both boys will help each other through this pivotal time in their lives.” In addition to the teens shifting to adulthood, Phil and Geoffrey’s relationship will be tested while Vivian revisits motherhood. Ashley, now a high schooler, will begin to rebel, and Hilary ascends on “a journey of self-exploration” after a tragic loss.
TVLine lists that all series regulars will return, including Jabari Banks (Bad Genius, Diary of a Wimpy Kid) as Will, Adrian Holmes (Worthy, Shelton Season) as Phillip, Cassandra Freeman (The Better Sister, Young Love) as Vivian, and Olly Sholotan (Run Hide Fight, Stand Up) as Carlton.
In additon to Hubert’s casting, TVLine reports Holmes’ real-life wife, actress Caroline Chikezie (Power Book II: Ghost), will join as a guest star. Her character is Dominique Warren, the London-based leader of the gang with which Geoffrey shares a history.
