Jane Fonda (Grace and Frankie, Klute) voiced opposition to the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery during a live event in New York City focused on free speech and First Amendment issues. According to Deadline, Fonda urged attendees at Rise Up, Sing Out: A Concert for the First Amendment to support efforts opposing the transaction.
During her remarks, the actress expressed concern about the impact she believes further media consolidation could have on journalism, cultural diversity, and freedom of expression. Fonda also referenced her personal connection to CNN through her late husband, CNN founder Ted Turner.
The event was held at The Town Hall in Manhattan and featured several actors, journalists, activists, and civil rights leaders. Among those participating were Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman, Erin Brockovich), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas, Killers of the Flower Moon), Bette Midler (Hocus Pocus, The Rose), Ayo Edebiri (The Bear, Bottoms), Tessa Thompson (Creed, Thor: Ragnarok), and journalist Joy Reid.
mxdwn previously covered the growing opposition to the proposed merger after a group of Hollywood creatives signed an open letter urging regulators to examine the deal closely. That report focused on concerns that combining two major media companies could reduce competition and limit opportunities for independent voices in entertainment and journalism. Fonda’s comments at the New York event echoed many of those same concerns.
mxdwn noted that the U.S. Department of Justice recently cleared Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN. However, the transaction still requires approval from regulators in the European Union and the United Kingdom. The outlet also reported that California’s Attorney General has been investigating the merger and is reportedly preparing a legal challenge.
Deadline notes De Niro also addressed the crowd during the event, speaking about the importance of free speech and the First Amendment. The actor described himself as “pretty close” to being a free speech absolutist, while encouraging people to use their own voices to respond to views they disagree with.
While the future of the proposed merger remains subject to additional regulatory review, the debate surrounding its potential impact on media and entertainment continues to draw attention from prominent figures across Hollywood.
