Jamie Lynn Spears (Zoey 101) prepares a return to our screens in the Netflix series, Sweet Magnolias, after more than 10 years without a role. The show premieres May 19, according to Hollywood Reporter.
The show, adapted from Sheryl Woods’ 11-book romance series, centers around three best friends from the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina. JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Reba) plays Maddie Townsend, Brooke Elliott (Drop Dead Diva) plays Dana Sue Sullivan, and Heather Headley (Chicago Med) plays Helen Decatur.
Spears’ role as Noreen Fitzgibbons, a young nurse who gets pregnant after an affair with Dr. Bill Townsend, played by Chris Klein (American Pie), gives the other women someone to gossip about in connection to the affair and her past life choices that led her to Serenity, according to Netflix.
She told Hollywood Reporter she had been in denial about how much she missed acting and was waiting for a project “that made sense.” Noreen’s storyline also corresponds to the events of Spears’ life off-screen.
After a four-season run that ended in 2008, 16-year-old Spears retired her lead role of Zoey Brooks on Zoey 101 and had her daughter, Maddie, in the same year. This part of her life made her the apparent pick to play Noreen in the eyes of director Norman Buckley (Chasing Life) and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson (Charmed), via Hollywood Reporter.
Viewers can now watch how Maddie, Dana Sue, Heather and Noreen navigate romances, careers and families in 10 episodes of Sweet Magnolias, ranging from 40-50 minutes on Netflix.
