HBO Max’s upcoming family drama pilot ‘How To Survive Without Me’ has added three new cast members, according to Deadline. Jack Ball (Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party, Kill The Monsters), Kylar Miranda (Baywatch, On Swift Horses) and Julian Grey (Fear the Walking Dead, The Matrix Resurrections) have signed on as series regulars, joining previously announced leads Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond, The Big Sick), Joshua Jackson (Dawson’s Creek, Fringe), Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory, The Flight Attendant), Julia Schlaepfer (1923, The Politician). The project continues to build momentum as it rounds out the ensemble at the center of the De Angelis family.
The pilot is written by Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran from a story co‑written with Robbie Rogers, Deadline reports. The series follows the De Angelis family in the aftermath of matriarch Beverly’s death. As the family struggles to navigate their shifting lives without her guidance, Beverly leaves behind one final plan, a way to keep them connected, provided they are willing to show up for one another.
Ball plays Cary, the middle son whose sharp wit and intellect mirror his late mother’s, per Deadline. After turning down a lucrative job offer, Cary works at his father’s financial planning firm while juggling demanding clients and Leo’s overwhelming grief. At home, Cary finds stability with his husband Luis, played by Miranda, and their two children.
Miranda’s character Luis is a pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers and MLB’s first openly gay player, Deadline notes. Luis is the calm counterbalance to Cary’s constant sense of overload, grounding their family life while navigating his own high‑pressure career.
Grey appears as PJ, the youngest sibling who still lives at home with Leo (Romano), according to Deadline. Though his siblings dismiss him as a freeloader, PJ’s reasons for staying home are more complicated than they realize. He spends his days drifting between the pool, video games and takeout, all charged to Leo’s credit card, while quietly carrying his own emotional weight.
Berlanti and Doran executive produce alongside Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman and Robbie Rogers for Berlanti Productions, Deadline adds.
