Newcomer Jabari Banks will take over as Will Smith’s (The Pursuit of Happyness) iconic character in Peacock’s 1990s sitcom reboot The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, entitled Bel-Air, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Smith revealed the news to Banks via Zoom – an infamous moment that was captured below.
Set in 1990s Bel-Air, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air follows the fictional version of Smith who was sent from his mom’s Philadelphia neighborhood to the Los Angeles neighborhood, Bel-Air, where his aunt and uncle reside. Now set in the modern-day, Bel-Air will reportedly “dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions, and biases that were impossible to fully explore in a 30-minute sitcom format, while still delivering swagger and nods to the original show,” via The Hollywood Reporter.
Banks is well-fit for his character, as he lives in West Philadelphia – the birthplace of his character – and graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2020. Alongside his passion for acting, Banks is a singer, songwriter, rapper, and basketball player. The original version of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is currently available to stream on HBO Max, while the reboot will be available on Peacock upon its release.
