ITV’s ‘The Tower’ Casts ‘Game of Thrones’ Star Gemma Whelan

Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones) is set to star as the lead in ITV’s upcoming drama series, The Tower. Based on Kate London’s (author, Death Message) novel Post Mortem, The Tower is set to be a three-episode limited series, via Deadline.

According to Deadline, Whelan is preparing to play Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins investigates the deaths of a teenage girl and a veteran beat cop after they mysteriously fall from a tower block. Following the pair’s fall, Lizzie Griffiths, a rookie officer, and a five-year-old boy are left behind on the roof of the tower block only for them to disappear in the days following the tragedy. Collins sets out to find her fellow officer and the young boy before they find themselves in further danger, all while trying to uncover the circumstances surrounding the untimely death of the teenaged girl and veteran officer.

The Tower‘s source material, Post Mortem, is one of three books written by London, all of which follow the characters of Collins and Griffiths. There is currently no word as to whether the subsequent books of London’s trilogy, Death Message and Gallowstone Lane, will also be adapted. According to Deadline, London’s books draw on her time as a Metropolitan Police officer.

Best known for playing Yara Greyjoy on HBO’s Game of Thrones, Whelan has appeared in many other hit series during her career. According to Deadline, Whelan starred in Killing Eve‘s third season, The End Of The F***ing World, and Gentleman Jack. The Tower will continue a recent relationship between Whelan and ITV, as last year, she played Anne Eaton in the channel’s series, White House Farm.

Filming on The Tower is set to begin in April, and according to Deadline, will be produced by Patrick Harbinson (writer, Homeland) through his production company Windhover Films in partnership with Mammoth Screen and ITV Studios. Jim Loach (director, Save Me Too) is set to direct the three-part series, with Sherie Myers (script consultant, I May Destroy You) and Paul Testar (producer, The Serpent) attached as producers.
