According to Deadline, Issa Rae(Insecure, Little) cancels a scheduled event at the Kennedy Center due to President Donald Trump being elected chairman. In a post on Instagram on Thursday, Rae thanked her fans while giving the disappointing news. The post reads, “Unfortunately, due to what I believe to be an infringement on the values of an institution that has faithfully celebrated artists of all backgrounds through all mediums, I’ve decided to cancel my appearance at this venue,” Rae wrote.
President Trump announced a plan to reshape the nation’s cultural center. The plan he puts at the performance center in Washington D.C which puts on base performances in the middle of a culture war called out the center programs. Trump wrote on Truth Social “Just last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth — THIS WILL STOP,” . “The Kennedy Center is an American Jewel and must reflect the brightest STARS on its stage from all across our Nation. For the Kennedy Center, THE BEST IS YET TO COME!”
Rae and other celebrities who have resigned from their leadership positions when Trump was elected chairman.According to MXDWN, Shonda Rhimes, creator of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” resigned as treasurer and board member, citing a misalignment with the center’s new direction. Similarly, musician Ben Folds stepped down from his role as artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra, expressing discomfort with the recent developments. Rhimes acknowledges in her post “If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him.”
These departures underscore a growing rift between the artistic community and the Kennedy Center’s current leadership. Many artists argue that the recent changes compromise the institution’s longstanding commitment to diversity and artistic freedom. As the Kennedy Center navigates this tumultuous period, the cultural sector watches closely, concerned about the potential implications for artistic expression and institutional integrity.
