Isabelle Huppert Cast in New Matthew Weiner Drama

News broke this week that the celebrated actress Isabelle Huppert has been cast in Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner’s new drama, The Romanoffs, according to IndieWire. The anthology series, which will premiere over Amazon Prime, will be the first television project of Weiner’s since Mad Men finished its run on AMC back in 2015.

Isabelle Huppert has been in especially high demand lately due to her immensely impressive performance in Paul Verhoeven’s film Elle, for which she received an Academy Award nomination and won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. Actors Christina Hendricks and John Slattery, past collaborators with Weiner on Mad Men, will reunite with the American filmmaker once again with the series. Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), Amanda Peet (Togetherness), and Marthe Keller (Marathon Man) have also been cast in the series.

Despite its historically based title, The Romanoffs will be set in modern day, telling the stories of people who believe themselves to be descendants of the infamous Russian dynasty. Matthew Weiner will work as writer, director, and executive producer on the series.

Weiner announced the project early last year. He described the anthology series as “contemporary”, but stressed that “every single episode…has a different cast, a different story and a different location. The thing that holds them together is that all of the stories involve people who believe themselves to be descendants of the Romanovs.”

The Romanoffs will be comprised of eight episodes, with Weiner set to direct four. The anthology series is expected to hit Amazon sometime in the spring of 2018.
