Ionic Origins: ‘Wonder Man’ Showrunner’s Official Statement On Character’s Mutant Status

With the latest Marvel series, Wonder Man, which makes it grand debut back on January 27, the MCU is ready to reimagined and reintroduced  the origin behind one of its heavy hitters. According to Comicbook, the series which focus on the journey of  Simon, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman, Aquaman) does an unusual approach and does not give any clues on how he came acquiring his powers. This a contrast on to what happens within the comics, in which he was given the powers by Baron Zemo, and later joined the Avengers.

Many viewers have theorized that this version of the titular hero will be following the mutant narrative. Accordance with Comicbook, this is the first that marvel decide on changing a superhero’s origin with other examples being Kamala Kahn, played by Iman Vellani (marvel Zombies, The Marvels) from Ms. Marvel.

Reported by Comicbook, The series showrunner, Andrew Guest (Community, Hawkeye) spoke in an interview with The Direct about this change, “You know, it’s a very good question. It’s one we discussed, and it’s one we decided we weren’t gonna answer. So I’ll leave up to the kind of people who make those kind of mutant questions.” Despite the changes, the series seems to make a significant impact, ending with an impressive 90% Rotten Tomatoes score and placing itself among the franchise’s top ten.

Stated by Comicbook, if the mutant theory is proven wrong, it’s clear that many believe his powers originate from Roxxon, the massive villainous corporation that has been referenced in several projects ranging from Agents of Shield to Cloak and Dagger. This new theory is bound to pave the way for a second season of the series, delving deeper into Simon’s past and uncovering the origins of his powers. We could further characterize the related aspects of his story, which include Ben Kingsley (The Thursday Murder Club, Hugo) as Trevor and his vengeful brother, Eric, who goes by the Grim Reaper.

All episodes of Wonder Man can be streamed on Disney+
