Yes, we are going to journey further into the Badlands. According to Deadline, Into the Badlands has officially been renewed for a third season on AMC. The second season premiered on March 19, 2017 and is set to end on May 21, 2017. The third season will premiere in 2018.
The stylized, martial arts series follows a warrior and a young boy in a postapocalyptic feudal society. It takes place 500 years after a war that left the world in ruins, in an area called the ‘Badlands’ which is somewhere in the United States. In this society, technology such as electricity and ground vehicles have survived, but society now rejects guns as weapons, and depends on melee weaponry aka weapons that can be used in hand to hand combat, such as swords, axes, clubs, etc. The warrior and young boy seek enlightenment by journeying through a feudal land controlled by barons, where they encounter ‘clippers’ (highly trained and loyal warriors for feudal barons), ‘cogs’ (slaves), ‘pickers’ (opium miners), and ‘dolls’ (prostitutes), as well as characters outside the feudal system, such as ‘The River King’ and ‘The Widow’.
The series stars Daniel Wu and Aramis Knight as the lead characters, with a supporting cast including Emily Beecham, Ally Ioannides, Marton Csokas, and Nick Frost.
This third season will have more episodes than the previous two seasons, coming in at 16 episodes (the first season had six episodes, while the second season had 10 episodes). The first season was filmed in Louisiana, while the second season was able to film in Ireland.
Into the Badlands has been pulling in an average of 3.6 million total viewers, which includes 2.1 million adults between the ages of 25-54. It is the fourth most watched scripted drama on cable, only behind AMC’s The Walking Dead, FX’s American Horror Story, and AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead. This translates into AMC claiming four of the five top cable shows, with Better Call Saul coming in at number 5.
Alfred Gough and Miles Miller, the co-showrunners of the series, said in a joint statement:
We are excited and grateful to continue our journey into the Badlands with Charlie, Joel, Susie and all of our friends at AMC. We also want to give a big clipper salute to our Irish and Chinese partners! The thought of doing an expanded 16-episode season is both thrilling and exhausting!
Charlie Collier, president of AMC, had the following to say regarding the show:
‘Into the Badlands’ looks like nothing else on television, a literal high-wire act attracting passionate and dedicated fans by the millions. Thanks to series creators and showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, the terrific cast, led by Daniel Wu, the amazing martial arts team guided by the incomparable Master Dee Dee and fight directors Stephen Fung and Andy Cheng, and everyone else involved who brings this thrill ride to the fans.
