As written by Deadline, Emmy-nominated actor Idris Elba (Three Thousand Years of Longing, The Suicide Squad) has just shared a new promotional teaser as well as as a release date for Netflix’s film adaptation of the hit detective drama series, Luther. The teaser features the titular character of John Luther (Elba) surrounded in shadow as a mysterious voice ominously whispers, “Something is coming” before adding, “You see me now?” The caption above the teaser also reveals the name of the film, Luther: The Fallen Sun, and that it will premiere in cinemas abroad on February 24, 2023, before releasing on Netflix on March 10, 2023.
According to Deadline, the plot of Luther: The Fallen Sun revolves around a grizzly serial killer terrorizing London as the incredibly talented, but discredited Luther wastes away behind prison bars. Tormented by his inability to capture the cyber psychopath now taunting him, Luther breaks out of prison to hunt down the genius killer and finish the job he started by any means necessary.
Alongside Elba, the film also features the acting talents of stars such as Andy Serkis (the Lord of the Rings franchise, the Planet of the Apes franchise), Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Pinocchio), and Dermot Crowley (The Death of Stalin, The Foreigner). Jamie Payne (Outlander, New Amsterdam) is set to direct the film with series creator Neil Cross (Spooks, The Mosquito Coast) writing the screenplay.
Netflix will produce the film in association with BBC with Cross, Elba, Peter Chernin (the Planet of the Apes franchise, Slumberland), Jenno Topping (Hidden Figures, Catch and Release), David Ready (the Fear Street trilogy, The Mountain Between Us), Dan Finlay (Tolkien, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates), Brendan Ferguson (The Edge of Seventeen, The BFG), Kris Thykier (Kick-Ass, Operation Mincemeat), and Priscilla Parish (Line of Duty, Bodyguard) serving as executive producers.
