Apparently actor/musician Idris Elba wants to add professional kickboxing on his career-to-do list. According to PEOPLE, the 43-year-old has been posting multiple kickboxing workout videos of himself on Instagram. Even though fans may have thought the Thor: Ragnarok star was prepping for an upcoming film or television role, it turns out he is actually training intensively so that he can become a professional kickboxer.
On Tuesday, Elba revealed his new career aspiration along with a new docu-series which is titled Idris Elba: Fighter. The show will follow a year in his kickboxing training journey across many countries/continents including Britain, Cuba, Japan, South Africa and Thailand. The docuseries will feature Elba’s first no-hold-barred competition against a professional brawler.
In regards to his kickboxing dream, Elba stated “It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to fight professionally. Entering the ring to further test myself as a human being is a challenge I have been looking to take on for quite some time.” The actor spent much of his twenties training in kickboxing for recreational fitness but as of now, he has not fought professionally. The show also indicated that “This is no act. There is no script. This fight is real as are the potential repercussions.”
In addition, Elba’s docuseries will give audiences never-before-seen access to the actor who has been largely private about his life offscreen in the past. Moreover, the show will showcase “what drives him, his aspirations in life and the challenges he wants to face and overcome.”
The series, will be produced by Shine North and Elba’s production company Green Door Pictures, will be broadcast on Discovery Networks International’s channels worldwide sometime early next year.
