Snoop Dogg has joined the cast of Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson produced Starz drama Black Mafia Family, according to Deadline. The West Coast Hip Hop legend will recur as spiritually themed character in the upcoming Detroit based series. This news comes after Lala Anthony and Empire’s Serayah are reportedly set to join the cast of the series. According to Deadline, both actresses will have recurring guest roles on the Starz series.
Part of 50 Cent’s overall deal with Starz inked back in 2018, Black Mafia Family is the true life tale of Detroit’s most notorious crime family. Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory were big in the motor city drug trade that exploded and turned ugly in the 1980s.
Long Beach native icon, Snoop will play the role of “Pastor Swift” the Flenory family’s spiritual advisor, according to Deadline. The Character is described to be man of the word, with the aura of an ex con. The Pastor believes in the power of the almighty and does his best to keep Meech and Terry in good graces. Pastor Swift becomes ingratiate in every part of the Flenory Bros life becoming their confidant, and even finding them a lawyer. All the attention that Swift pays to Meech and Terry doesn’t sit right with their father, but not even he could deny all the good that the pastor has done for them.
Power star LaLa Anthony will play the character Markaisha Taylor, the wife of flamboyant drug dealer who is friends with Meech and Terry. She sees a seriousness and sense of purpose in Terry and she wants to harness that to make herself rich and powerful. After developing friendship with him she becomes his confidant and ultimately his love. She ends up putting everything Terry has built out on the streets at stake, according to Deadline.
Empire alum Serayah will portray Lori Walker, Demetrius Flenory’s girlfriend. The mother of his daughter Neeka, Walker is smart and driven. She was college athlete who fell for Meech’s bad boy charm. Walker is more mature and clear eyed now. Her daughter is her whole world, and she expects less out of Meech, but that only makes him want her more, according to Deadline.
Jackson and Detroit native Power writer Randy Huggins will executive produce the series. Black Family Mafia will also be produced by Terry Kopp, Anthony Wilson and Anne Clements. On behalf of Starz, Senior Vice President of Original Programming Kathryn Tyus-Adair will be overseeing the project. For Lionsgate, VP of Current Programming Erin Conroy will be overseeing the series, according to Deadline.
