According to Screenrant, Hulu’s new historical drama series Washington Black opened on Rotten Tomatoes with a 100% critic score. While this only comes from nine reviews, it represents an early critical success for the series. The series is based on the novel of the same name by Esi Edugyan, which in turn is inspired by the life of Andrew Bogle.
The Series’ Hulu description reads “Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, Washington Black follows the 19th-century odyssey of George Washington “Wash” Black, an eleven-year-old boy born on a Barbados sugar plantation, whose prodigious scientific mind sets him on a path of unexpected destiny. When a harrowing incident forces Wash to flee, he is thrust into a globe-spanning adventure that challenges and reshapes his understanding of family, freedom, and love. As he navigates uncharted lands and impossible odds, Wash finds the courage to imagine a future beyond the confines of the society he was born into.”
The series stars Ernest Kingley Junior (The Sandman, War of The Worlds) as the titular Washington Black, Tom Ellis (Lucifer, Buffalo Soldiers) as Christopher “Titch” Wilde, Iola Evans (Choose Or Die, The 100) as Tanna Goff, Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us, American Fiction) as Medwin, and Rupert Graves (Sherlock, V For Vendetta) as Mr. Goff, according to IMDb.
The series is directed by Maurice Marable (Woke, Big Love), Wanuri Kahiu (From A Whisper, Look Both Ways), and Rob Seidenglanz (Resident Evil, Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina).
The series now sits at an 88%, based on 17 critic reviews. As Screenrant notes, the score in the website is not an average of every review score; rather, it indicates what percentage of reviewers gave the series a positive review of any kind. As such, not all reviewers gave the series a perfect score.
Washington Black is available to watch on Hulu.
