According to the press release, the gang goes on a Dune-esque adventure when they are forced to shrink themselves to explore Nibbler’s litter box when the pet falls ill. The first clip above is entitled “Sandstorm.” In the second clip, “Life Finds a Way,” the fearsome foursome is introduced to other creatures throughout the “desert” by their new alien tour guide.
According to the press release, the full season 11 synopsis reads as follows: After a brief ten-year hiatus, Futurama has crawled triumphantly from the cryogenic tube, its full original cast and satirical spirit intact. The ten all-new episodes of season eleven have something for everyone. New viewers will be able to pick up the series from here, while long-time fans will recognize payoffs to decades-long mysteries – including developments in the epic love story of Fry and Leela, the mysterious contents of Nibbler’s litter box, the secret history of evil Robot Santa, and the whereabouts of Kif and Amy’s tadpoles. Meanwhile there’s a whole new pandemic in town as the crew explores the future of vaccines, bitcoin, cancel culture, and streaming TV.
Futurama’s return was first announced in February 2022 with writers and co-creators Matt Groening (The Simpsons, Disenchantment) and David X. Cohen (Beavis and Butt-Head, Futurama: Bender’s Game) helming all episodes for a twenty-entry run. The series also garnered the original voice cast including Leela and Fry’s voice actors, Katy Sagal (Sons of Anarchy, Married with Children) and Billy West (The Ren & Stimpy Show, Space Jam), respectively. Joining them were Tress MacNeille (Animaniacs, The Simpsons), Maurice LaMarche (Pinky and the Brain, Zootopia), Lauren Tom (Friends, Andi Mack), Phil LaMarr (Pulp Fiction, Samurai Jack) and David Herman (Idiocracy, Office Space). John DiMaggio who voiced fan-favorite character, Bender, would eventually join the cast as well after a mild dispute.
Futurama has had an interesting existence since its debut in 1999. The original series ran for four seasons on FOX. Then in 2003, it was picked up for syndication on Cartoon Network’s adult swim. In 2007, the network produced four direct-to-video films which Comedy Central would later pick up as episodes for a fifth season. Then in 2009, Comedy Central revived the series for the first time for two additional seasons. There was also an audio-only episode featured on The Nerdist Podcast in 2017.
All past episodes of Futurama are available to stream on Hulu. New episodes stream every Monday.
