Stephen King’s Castle Rock premiered on Hulu for its’ first season and has recently been renewed for a second season. The mind-bending thriller produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions with Stephen King has been one of the most popular series released by Hulu Original series in terms of viewership. The sixth episode came out on Wednesday.
Castle Rock is one of the original series that Hulu has created in trying to compete with other streaming competition like Amazon and Netflix. Randy Freer, CEO of Hulu, about their strategy for making their mark in going for a smaller amount that has a large impact.
“We’re not going to make 800 shows,” Freer commented to CNBC in a June interview. “I mean, next year we’ll probably make 20 or 25. And it’s important to us to make big, impactful shows that delight our customers, that are relevant and entertaining and have cultural conversations going.”
Castle Rock is an original story by King that got its’ namesake from the fictional town in Maine that is highlighted throughout Kings’ oeuvre. It is described as “combine[ing] the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland.”
The project follows Henry Deaver, a lawyer specializing in death row cases back to his birthplace to defend an unknown inmate whilst secrets about his adopted mother Ruth, a real estate agent, Molly Strang and ex-sheriff Alan Pangborn.
Castle Rock was developed for television by Sam Shaw & Dustin Thomason who also serve as executive producers. They work alongside J.J. Abrams, Mark Lafferty, Ben Stephenson, Liz Glotzer and Stephen King. The project comes from Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.
