Hulu to Stream ‘Sonic Boom’ Series Based on the Popular Animated Hedgehog

Hulu recently acquired the subscription-streaming rights to Sonic Boom, Variety reports. The CG-animated series will star the one and only Sonic the Hedgehog.

The first season of the series will feature 52 episodes and will be available to stream in English and Spanish later this month. This was made possible by an agreement between the video-game publisher SEGA and Technicolor Animation Productions (formerly OuiDo Productions).

Hulu acquired Sonic Boom after the series aired on Turner’s Cartoon Network. The animated show can still be seen on Cartoon Network with select episodes available on CN.com. The popular streaming service now has the rights to stream all episodes of Sonic Boom across multiple devices such as set-top boxes, gaming consoles, mobile, desktops, and tablets.

SEGA first unveiled Sonic the Hedgehog’s character for a video-game back in 1991. Since then, he’s still been fairly popular on TV, licensed merchandise, comics, film, and video games. Moreover, the series is Hulu’s first CG animated series and will center on Sonic and his friends Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and newcomer Sticks. Together, they’ll embark on various adventures and battle Sonic’s arch-enemy, Dr. Eggman.

In the United States, Sonic Boom frequently ranked as the No.1 or 2 telecast in its time slot on Cartoon Network. The executive producers for the series include Evan Baily, Donna Friedman Meir, and Jane McGregor on behalf of SEGA, and Sandrine Nguyen and Boris Hertzog on behalf of Technicolor Animation Productions. Serving as showrunner and executive producer for Sonic Boom is Bill Freiberger. Takashi Lizuka, the head of SEGA’s Sonic Team will oversee the animated show to ensure that it pertains to the Sonic universe and his overall creative vision for the series.
