Hulu is set to develop a new drama series by Dan Fogelman (Cars, This Is Us) later this year. According to Deadline, the streamer gave the green light after reviewing the concept.
For many, dramas exemplify what scripted television stands for. Many other streamers are investing huge sums either into new drama series or already established franchises. This specific script from Fogelman was reportedly reviewed by senior level executives at 20th Television and Hulu. From that same article, it is reported that Dan Fogelman would serve as an executive producer. The drama stars Sterling K. Brown (Black Panther, Waves), who will also serve as an executive producer. This will be the duo’s next project since the last time they worked together on This Is Us. Jess Rosenthal (This Is Us, Only Murders in the Building) and John Hoberg (Better Off Ted, Elemental) also join Fogelman and Brown as executive producers. This new untitled series will be produced by 20th Television. As of now, no more details have been released at this time.
Hulu has other upcoming original dramas releasing this year including, Tiny Beautiful Things (2023) adapted by Liz Tigelaar (Nashville, Little Fires Everywhere), Saint X (2023) adapted by Leila Gerstein (The Handmaid’s Tale, Hart of Dixie), and Class of ‘09 by Tom Rob Smith (American Crime Story, London Spy). Other Streamers have also put out new series in this genre such as Netflix’s The Diplomat by Deborah Cahn (The West Wing, Grey’s Anatomy) and Obsession by Nicholas Barnard (A Glass Half Full, Play Me).
Fogelman has made numerous hits over the years, including being the creative head behind NBC drama, This Is Us. According to Deadline, the show toped as the network’s No. 1 broadcast drama for six consecutive seasons. Fogelman is also working on Only Murders in the Building (2021) as an executive producer alongside creators Steve Martin (L.A. Story, The Jerk) and John Hoffman (Looking, Gracie and Frankie). He more recently co-created Fox’s drama Pitch (2016) for which he also served as an executive producer, and both created and executive produced the hit ABC comedy, The Neighbors (2012).
From that same article, Brown will star in the IFC feature film Biosphere (2023), which made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this year. He also just completed production on Hulu Original’s miniseries Washington Black (2023) from 20th Television. Deadline also points out that this is an adaptation of Esi Edugyan’s (Out of the Sun, Dreaming of Elsewhere: Observations on Home) novel that he’s also serving as an executive producer.
