Hulu Renews ‘The Mindy Project’ for Sixth and Final Season

The Mindy Project is saying goodbye again. Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that streaming service Hulu has renewed the comedy for its sixth and final season, which will begin to air in September.

Hulu’s head of content, Craig Erwich, issued a statement about the end of the show, saying:

It has been an honor and a joy to work with Mindy and the entire creative team behind The Mindy Project. This series has been part of Hulu since we launched the service and, thanks to Mindy’s incredibly unique voice and vision, has remained one of our most popular and beloved series over the past five years. While we can’t wait to see what Mindy has in store for what will undoubtedly be a fantastic sixth and final season, we know The Mindy Project will live on as fans will continue to watch, discover and re-live all of the best moments from the complete series on Hulu.

The Mindy Project first aired on Fox for three seasons from 2012 to 2015, where it was canceled. After Fox canceled the comedy, Hulu stepped in and saved the day and renewed the show for a 26-episode fourth season.

An episode order has yet to be released for the final season.

After revealing that the upcoming season will be the last, show creator and star Mindy Kaling talked with the magazine to talk about what the show has planned for its final season.

Kaling said that now is the perfect time to end the series because viewers have seen all of the characters mature since their time of being on the series. Kaling specifically cited her character having a baby and that viewers have seen her single, they’ve seen her dating and, spoiler alert for the season five finale that was released on Tuesday, they’ve seen her get married.

Kaling also said that she knows how she wants the show to end. “I’ve always had an image in my mind of what would be in the last five minutes of the finale, but I don’t know what the explanations are for it,” Kaling said.

She also said she was planning on having a series finale that would wrap up loose ends instead of having a cliffhanger ending and is looking forward to being able to wrap everything up, noting that she wasn’t involved with the final season of The Office because she was working on The Mindy Project.

The Mindy Project‘s final season will begin in September.
