Hulu recently announced the renewal of the fan-favorite series Tell Me Lies which will be returning for season two on the streaming platform, according to Comicbook. Fans have been celebrating on social media since the announcement was made. The series is based on the novel by Carola Lovering (Can’t Look Away, Too Good To Be True).
According to Comicbook, Megan Oppenheimer (Queen America, Broken) serves as an executive producer and showrunner for the Hulu original Tell Me Lies. Other executive producers include Emma Roberts (Abandoned, First Kill), Karah Preiss (Holler, In a Relationship), and Matt Matruski (First Kill) for Belletrist Productions. Laura Lewis (For Walter and Josiah, Long Weekend) and Stephanie Drachkovitch (Hollywood Medium, The Real Murders of Atlanta) are working as producers for Rebelle Media and also producing, Sam Schlaifer (Puffy) and Shannon Gibson (Cusp, Girl Callin’) for Refinery 29.
The show follows the tumultuous but intoxicating relationship of Lucy Albright, played by Grace Van Patten (Nine Perfect Strangers, Mayday), and Stephen DeMarco, played by Jackson White (Mrs. Fletcher, The Middle), over the course of eight years. The couple meets at college, a time in their lives when seemingly ordinary choices lead to irrevocable consequences. Although their relationship begins like any other campus romance, the couple quickly falls into an addictive entanglement that will permanently change their lives and the lives of everyone they care about.
According to Comicbook, Van Patten said in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar that something that she finds important about playing the main character Lucy is that she can show that strong confident people can still end up in toxic relationships. Van Patten wants people to know that anybody can be fooled into one of those relationships. She also mentions how she has never seen a TV series where the main character who appears to have their life together, loses everything.
Executive producer Oppenheimer spoke about the show and how it serves as a cautionary tale for young love. They also mentioned that the crew was hoping that making a show that talks about toxic relationships will start important conversations among the young viewers.
