Hulu Renews ‘Difficult People’ for Season Three

Hulu’s original programming slate is continuing to grow. Deadline has confirmed that Difficult People, one of the original comedies that was released for streaming on the website, has been renewed for its third season.

Julie Klausner, the star and creator of the show, teased fans this morning on Twitter about wanting to share some exciting news. After backtracking and considering not posting the news, she eventually posted a video to Twitter this morning, confirming the news about the show getting renewed.

Entertainment Weekly said that the third season, which will premiere at some point in 2017, will consist of 10 episodes.

The show revolves around Klausner’s character, Julie Kessler, and Billy Eichner’s character, Billy Epstein, and their lives in New York City as they regularly hate everyone and everything with the exception of each other. Andrea Martin, Gabourey Sidibe and Fred Armisen also guest star on the show as Julie’s self-absorbed mother, Marilyn, Billy’s boss, Denise, at the cafe he works at and Billy’s brother, Garry, respectively.

This past season featured many well-known guest stars, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, who starred as himself when he came into Julie and Billy’s rehearsal space wanting to know who lied and said that their musical about Jimmy Carter was better than his (Hamilton). Joel McHale guest starred as Billy’s trainer who ends up getting arrested for being a cannibal and murdering his clients. And Tina Fey also guest starred as herself, and said she was working on a movie and needed to use the front steps of Marilyn’s apartment.

Difficult People was originally developed as a comedy show that was going to air on USA. Instead, the show was sold to Hulu with a straight-to-series order after USA decided to focus more on drama shows than comedy shows. The show first premiered on Aug. 5, 2015, and released episodes weekly. The second season, which premiered on July 12, 2016, also released one episode a week for those with a Hulu subscription to watch.

The third season of Difficult People will premiere some time in 2017.
