Hulu has announced that season three of their hit comedy-drama series, The Great, will drop all episodes on May 12. The streaming service released this information on Twitter and provided a first look picture alongside the news.
The Great is a historical based and satirical comedy-drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. The series is fictionalized and portrays Catherine in her youth and marriage to Emperor Peter III of Russia, focusing on the plot to kill her depraved and dangerous husband. Catherine the Great is played by Elle Fanning (Maleficient, Super 8), and Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies, The Menu) stars opposite of her as Emperor Peter III. The show’s first season was released in 2020, and season two came out in 2021. It was renewed for a season three last January.
In this upcoming third season, Catherine and Peter take great strides to salvage what is left of their marriage after Catherine imprisoned his friends and almost had him murdered. Peter must also deal with visions of his dead father (Jason Isaacs, Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris) as Catherine spreads her word across borders and must compromise to create progress as a political leader.
Australian playwright Tony McNamara (The Favourite, Poor Things) created, wrote and executive produced The Great, along with the production team featuring executive producers Fanning, Hoult, Marian Macgowan (The Rage in Placid Lake, Two Hands), Mark Winemaker (Warehouse 13, Defiance), Brittany Kahan Ward (All the Bright Places, The Bell Jar) Doug Mankoff (Nebraska, The Ward), Andrew Spaulding (All The Bright Places, The Ward) , Ron West (The Night Guest, Combat Control) and Josh Kesselman (1922, Daylight). Civic Center Media, an affiliation between United Talent Agency (UTA) and MRC Television is in partnership with Hulu to develop, produce and finance premium television series.
All ten episodes of season three of The Great will drop on May 12 on Hulu.
