Director and showrunner Nick Paley’s (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Broad City) comedy pilot Phony has been ordered to series by Hulu, according to a report from Deadline’s Rosy Cordero. The news comes almost a year after the streaming colossus gave the greenlight to a pilot for the show, which follows a young man named Sonny who awakens in the hospital after a car crash to find his mother seemingly replaced by an impostor. Like the pilot, the series will star Sim Nivola (The White Lotus, Maestro) and Connie Britton (Nashville, Friday Night Lights).
Additionally, writer/director Anthony King (Silicon Valley, Broad City), likely best known for writing the script for the stage adaptation of Beetlejuice, will join Phony as a second showrunner. Original creator Nick Paley, meanwhile, is known primarily for his writing credit on 2021’s Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, which serves as a prequel to the viral series of mockumentary shorts created by Dean Fleischer-Camp (Lilo and Stitch, Fraud) and Jenny Slate (Zootopia, Dying For Sex). Paley has also helmed multiple critically acclaimed short films, such as Picture Day and Andy and Zach.
In Phony, Nivola will play the aforementioned Sonny, who Deadline describes as “the most beloved student at his high school,” with the qualifier that “the only person who really knows him is his mom. Further complicating matters is the fact that his mother Ellen, played by Connie Britton, is also his principal. While the exact details of the plot have been kept under wraps, the series has been described as a mix of comedy and mystery with coming-of-age elements. Both Nivola and Britton will serve as executive producers alongside King, as well as Drew Goddard (The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods) and Sarah Esberg (Okja, Moonlight), who represent the show’s production company, Goddard Textiles.
Phony will release on Hulu at an unknown date.
